Weekend Recap 5/3/26: Practice Rounds Set The Stage
The calendar has officially turned to the Mobil Classic—but if you were expecting fireworks right out of the gate, this opening weekend was more about quiet preparation than leaderboard movement.
No official tournament rounds were posted, but don’t mistake that for inactivity. Behind the scenes, more than half the field was already putting in work, with 11 of the 16 players logging practice rounds as they begin to size up the tournament and each other.
Headlining the early action was defending champion Reed Oettinger, who is following up a 2nd place finish at THE PRIMETIME Championship. Calm, methodical, and clearly comfortable in an event he’s already won in 2025, Oettinger’s presence alone set the tone. There’s no scoreboard yet—but the message was clear: the defending champ is back, and he’s preparing like it.
He wasn’t alone.
Casey Rutkey, fresh off a strong debut season, continued to look like one of the most locked-in players on Tour. Colin Ford and Sean McKenzie also made early appearances, each taking a measured approach as they navigated their practice rounds with an eye toward avoiding big numbers when it counts.
Marc Dispenza and AJ Pearl brought a more upbeat energy to their rounds, while Kyle Monroe and Jake Cleary quietly went about their business—two players who could easily sneak into contention if things click for their tournament rounds.
Jackson Lathrop, Christian Benzing, and Noah Alviti rounded out the practice group, all showing some flashes of form as they begin dialing in their games. For Lathrop, it’s about consistency and ball striking. For Benzing and Alviti, it’s about putting together a complete round and avoiding big numbers. Practice may not count, but momentum absolutely does.
And that’s really what this weekend was about: confidence.
No scores. No pressure. Just 10 players starting to build a feel for how their games are and what it’s going to take for them to win.
Five players have yet to make an appearance—whether that’s strategic patience or a lack of urgency remains to be seen. But with the clock ticking toward official rounds, the window to prepare is closing fast.
Because once the first scorecard is posted, this shifts instantly from preparation… to pressure.
And at the Mobil Classic, there’s no easing into it.
